Heat-Pistons: Play |
The 7-1, 330-pound O'Neal usually draws automatic double-teams in the low post but was primarily played 1-on-1 by the Pistons, which allowed Detroit's defense to stay close to the perimeter for shooters. As a result, Williams missed all four of his 3-pointers, Posey missed three, Payton two and Walker one.
All-Star guard Dwyane Wade also missed a 3-pointer. He scored 10 points but was the only Heat in double figures besides O'Neal, who made 12-of-18 shots in 28 minutes.
Miami shot just 36 percent (25-of-69), made just 16-of-36 free throws and was beaten on the boards, 58-43. Posey needed X-rays on his right thumb, which were negative.
Tayshaun Prince scored 16 points, Richard Hamilton added 15 and Ben Wallace swept 15 boards for the Pistons, who never trailed and broken open a relatively close game by holding the Heat to 15 points in the final period.
Pistons forward Rasheed Wallace left with a quadriceps strain that was not serious.
